The American Camp Association (ACA) has announced that Mercersburg Academy Summer Programs has received ACA-Accredited Camp
"ACA accreditation means that Mercersburg Academy Summer Programs submitted to a thorough review of its operation by the American Camp Association — from staff qualifications and training to emergency management — and complied with the highest standards in the industry," said Cindy Moore of the ACA’s National Standards Commission.
"Mercersburg Academy Summer Programs promotes summers of growth and fun in an environment committed to safety," said Coleman Weibley, director of summer and external programs, "ACA accreditation is a thorough risk-management assessment, and serves as a verification of our commitment and accountability to the children and families we serve.”
Having offered summer programs for decades, Mercersburg Academy established the Office of Summer Programs in 1997; Mercersburg Adventure Camp, the school's flagship summer program, was created in 1999. The programs operate on the Academy campus over the school's summer break. Today, Mercersburg offers 11 summer programs ranging from Adventure Camp to enrichment and arts programs to sports camps.
“Our community is proud of the hard work the school has put into developing Mercersburg Summer Programs over the years,” said Katie Titus, Mercersburg’s head of school. “Under Coleman Weibley's leadership, we have confirmed our ACA accreditation, which is a nod to the program's long history of excellence in providing a space for learning, personal growth, and, most importantly, fun. We know the programs will continue to build on the ACA standards and I look forward to seeing what's next for the program as our work in the summer supports the broader mission of Mercersburg Academy.”
ACA accreditation standards focus primarily on the program quality, health, and safety aspects of a camp's operation. The American Camp Association, which is the only independent accrediting organization reviewing camp operations in the country, collaborates with experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross, and other youth-serving agencies to assure that current practices at the camp reflect the most up-to-date, research-based standards in camp operation. The ACA accreditation will help Mercersburg Summer Programs continue to provide healthy, developmentally appropriate activities and learning experiences; discovery through experiential education; caring, competent role models; service to the community and the environment; and opportunities for leadership and personal growth.
