Back to School

August 25th, 2010

Even though Mercersburg Summer Central typically stays summery no matter what the outside world may say, we do acknowledge that the time for all of our favorite campers to return to the academic realm is fast approaching.  We wish everyone a fantastic start to the new school year and have one piece of advice, go into your classes with style!  Mercersburg Summer veterans are well prepared for the first day of school given their experience with breaking the ice, meeting new people and making everyone feel welcome!  Stay tuned to our media page for photo, video releases and updates if you’re in need of a Summer boost!

Bittersweet

August 18th, 2010

This past Friday, English as a Second Language Camp concluded their five week journey in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania.  Students from all over the world hopefully had a rewarding, American, English speaking experience and we know that we enjoyed having each and every one of them.  Every student was able to experience a practice TOEFL test thanks to nearby Dickinson College where participants and teachers alike were able to assess their progress!  Final grades have been sent out and our wish is that every student is able to take what they learned and expand upon it until we see them again next year!  It looks like we have sent off 72 international students who have a better understanding of American boarding school culture and can speak, listen and write English more confidently than before.

E4E

August 13th, 2010

This weekend Mercersburg Summer welcomes seventy-three incoming Mercersburg Academy students for Essentials for Excellence Camp(E4E).  E4E is an orientation program that prepares new students for life at a boarding school, and more specifically life at Mercersburg Academy.  I know when I first moved here I didn’t know a dog bone from a study guide, but I had the chance to peek in on an E4E session a couple years back, and it made a world of a difference.  Now I’m the most sophisticated pooch around… well, I think so.  E4E is the perfect opportunity for new students to get acquainted with the dorms, classrooms, technology, faculty, and traditions of Mercersburg Academy in a fun, summer environment.  I know I’ll send my pups to E4E!

What a great summer

August 9th, 2010

Summer 2010 was a ton of fun.  I have met so many new friends as a result of three amazing sessions of Adventure Camp.  Every day my ears still perk up thinking I hear the sound of the MAC camp song in the distance or the pounding of tables in the dining hall, but it’s only my imagination.  I keep thinking that I smell a s’more cookout in the distance, but my nose is just playing tricks on me again.  I suppose if I’m going to have a particular batch of smells caught in my sniffer, it might as well be those of adventure camp.  The countdown is already on for Summer 2011, can’t wait to see you here again.  If anyone wants to visit, you can expect this face to be welcoming you with open arms.

Fun Ahoy!

July 27th, 2010

It is extremely hard to believe that we are almost halfway through the last week of Adventure Camp.  What an awesome summer it has been.  These canoers seem to be enjoying their time at Cowan’s Gap where the Great Outdoors have taken many a Mercersburg Camper.  Canoers learn the basics of paddling, participate in relay races and have been known to conquer an obstacle course or two while at Cowan’s Gap State Park where the water is calm and everyone is comfortable getting their sea…. well, lake legs!

Young Writers

July 27th, 2010

Young Writers Camp went on a field trip yesterday to HBP printing where they got to see how a work goes from an idea to a book!  The great staff there gave the students, what had to be, an inspiring and eye opening tour of the print process.

Fortune Favors the Bold

July 21st, 2010

I’ll be honest, when I was just a pup, I was the most soft spoken pooch in the pound.  Singing songs at a campfire, performing a skit, introducing myself to a group of 60 some kids would have been terrifying to me.

It’s a race!

July 21st, 2010

Despite a less than favorable climate, MAC campers were able to keep their spirits high all day Wednesday and the day culminated in Adventure Camp’s fabled Turtle Races at night.  Turtle Race night is an evening filled with relays and other fun Hurricane Tornado Competitions.  Last night campers competed for their team in a t-shirt relay, kayak relay, ping pong ball hunt, and finally, the splash contest!  The campers had an absolute ball and everyone contributed to their side.  Campers and Counselors alike look forward to this dynamic night in Mercersburg’s olympic size indoor pool.

A night under the stars

July 16th, 2010

This session of MAC, campout included an extra little treat.  Stargazing!  Mercersburg Academy faculty member Jim Malone came out to our very own astronomy shed to share his love for astronomy with our adventure campers.  The night was perfect, without a cloud in the sky and a crescent moon hanging beautifully above the Mercersburg valley.

Enriching Adventures

July 13th, 2010

While highlights of MAC and Teen Adventures certainly include things such as whitewater rafting trips, baseball games, campouts, high ropes courses and the like, adventure camp’s enrichments are also a ton of fun. This session our enrichments include activities like culinary delights, digital photography, camera crew, ceramics and physics fun. These activities are all about inclusion and having a blast, but who knows, campers could learn a few things as well! The egg drop activity in Teen physics fun might appear, on the surface, to be an awesome opportunity to crack an egg. However, our students also learn about gravity, drag and how to build an effective parachute.
