Enrichments? Yea, we have those

February 22nd, 2011

A big part of adventure camp is our Enrichments. Enrichments are a chance for campers to try new things and explore already existent passions whether it be in art, music, science or even cooking! This year we’ve spiced up our enrichment offerings. Listen to this awesome MAC enrichment line up: Old School Science Lab, Edible Experiments, Digital Photography, The Joy of Cooking, Iron Chef, MAC Films, Wizard Training, The Craft of Art, Adventures in Clay, and Center Stage. What doesn’t sound fun about any of those?

A Good Cabin Inspector Never Takes a Day Off

October 29th, 2010

Hey, everybody! It’s good to see you again! Right now, I’m at the school library hitting the books. Or, maybe I actually just caught a book!

Anyway, this time of year is always cool. World Series baseball is here, and football is in full swing. But most of all, I love Halloween. It is one of my favorite holidays, because it reminds me so much of camp. However, even though I get to dress up at Halloween, it is still not the same as dressing up for cabin inspection. Remember those? I’m sure you all are practicing cleaning your rooms at home, so you can hit a home run during cabin inspection this upcoming summer.

Cache me if you can

July 23rd, 2010

One of several Great Outdoor selections at Mercersburg Adventure Camp is Geocaching.  Geocaching may seem like one of the duller outdoor activities but after an hour or so, it becomes clear that it is ever bit as interesting as horseback riding, kayaking, mountain biking, etc.  On the full day, geocachers go to James Buchanon state forest and scour the landscape for caches left by others and even plant some of their own.  Their is one thing this day is not, boring!

Fortune Favors the Bold

July 21st, 2010

I’ll be honest, when I was just a pup, I was the most soft spoken pooch in the pound.  Singing songs at a campfire, performing a skit, introducing myself to a group of 60 some kids would have been terrifying to me.

One Sweet Night

July 20th, 2010

The first full day in Adventure Camp is busy, a little crazy, but mostly just fun.  Junior Adventure Campers went out to our rock wall in the morning and then tubing down Antietam Creek.  They also had a blast at Carnival in the evening.  Talk about a jam packed day!  The older Adventure Campers had enrichments in the morning, great outdoors in the afternoon, and the same carnival in the evening, complete with games, a giant inflatable obstacle course, cotton candy and snowcones.  Finally, to cap it all off, MAC’s were drafted into either the Hurricanes or Tornadoes in a climactic ceremony in the Simon Theatre.  A ridiculously fun day all around, but just an average day at Adventure Camp.

No Ceilings

July 16th, 2010

My wish for adventure campers is that they not only have an amazing two weeks of camp trying new things and meeting new people, but through that experience they realize that they are capable of much more than they may have previously thought.  They are capable of rafting down the Lower Youghiogheny River at break neck speeds, climbing a tower at Cedar Ridge Adventures, getting up in front of the whole camp on skit night, and above all else, helping each other do all these amazing things!

Species: Adventuris Camperaneous

July 8th, 2010

While tracking this rare specimen in the wild bush of Mercersburg, I’ve been able to make a few key observations. There are a few traits inherent in every adventure camper that become more apparent when watching them in their element such as an enrichment, sports rotation, or even a teen karaoke night.

Theme nights!

July 1st, 2010

It is customary for every session of Adventure Camp in both MAC and Teen Adventures to have a theme night. This session of MAC the theme night was Monsters Inc.  The food was scary good and the activities on Ford Patio were spine chillingly fun!  Teen Adventures had their own awesome theme night.  Ford Patio was transformed into a beautiful Luau scene complete with Chicken and Pineapple kebobs, limbo and hula hooping.  The evening culminated in a wacky Hawaiian tourist relay race.  Theme nights are a big part of what makes Adventure Camp special at Mercersburg, but as always, you never know when they’re coming!

Resources

May 21st, 2010

If anyone is ever in need of a good resource for summer camps, I have the perfect listing website for you! www.signupforcamp.com.  The lovely people at signupforcamp.com decided to create a listing website not long ago and currently operate one of the more efficient, accurate and comprehensive summer camp opportunities websites out there.  They’re motivated purely out of a desire to present parents and kids with a wealth of summer options in one convenient location.  They were also nice enough to interview us and get the scoop on our summer programs!  Check out the blog post here.
