  7. When the campers returned from their daylong hike in the Blue Mountains, they lumbered back to their cabins to take showers and get ready for dinner in the mess hall. Along the way, a small group of three friends decided to stop by the infirmary to check on Molly, the only one in the camp who did not make the hike. Molly had complained of a stomachache that morning and was escorted by a counselor after breakfast to the camp infirmary where she was to spend the day with the nurse. When the concerned friends reached the infirmary, they noticed that the lights were all off and the door was battered and hanging loosely from its hinges, as if someone had used great force to pry it open. They cautiously entered the small building, which was now lit only by the sinking sun streaming through the windows. Once inside, their timid calls for Molly or the nurse on duty were met with a deafening silence. Nervously, they moved in a tight pack past the nurse’s desk, which had scattered papers spilling onto the floor, until they came to the room where Molly was supposed to have spent the day. The door was wide open and the room was empty, with the exception of a small wooden box sitting in the middle of the bed.
