Why Social Media?

The internet is bound with thousands of new images uploaded every day, and Flikr is one of the most useful tools for sharing photos.  Flickr allows you to easily upload and share ‘photostreams’ – which is simply a gallery of all your photos – and Mercersburg Summer Programs has a constantly growing collection of our campers, family and friends to share with the world.

You can easily come and visit the site to see more about Mercersburg camp programs and the adventures our campers undertake every year.  Its easy! And you don’t have to sign up to see the photos. If you would like to go to the Mercersburg Picture Gallery at any point, you can. Just click here!

1. Go to Flickr.com
2. In the top corner it says ‘Create Your Account’ – click on this button
3. If you already have a Yahoo ID, enter it in here, if not you can make one of your own by clicking ‘Sign Up’ on the right hand side
4. This will take you to a page that will ask for some basic contact information to create a Yahoo ID
5. Click ‘Create My Account’ – and you are all set to go!

From Flickr you can view all of Mercersburg Summer’s photos at www.flickr.com/photos/summeratmercersburg/ and you can upload and share your own photos with family and friends as well!

140 little characters at a time, people have been using Twitter to share thoughts, links and updates with family, friends and coworkers across the globe.  Twitter has exploded in popularity because of its simple purpose and ease of use for millions, and Mercersburg Summer Programs is keeping our growing network of family, friends, and camper alumni up-to-date on all things Summer!

Mercersburg Summer sends out frequent links to photos of campers enjoying summer, resources on programs and new camp offerings, and updates about what our campers and alumni are up to all year long.

Since Mercersburg’s site is public, you can go directly to the site at www.twitter.com/mburgsummer, or it’s easy to connect and follow updates from Mercersburg Summer and join in the discussion on Twitter:

1. Visit their Web Site here.
2. Fill in the requested information (Note: there is a checkbox you can ‘uncheck’ to not receive Twitter’s Newsletter!)
3. The next page will ask for information about your email account to see if anyone in your contacts is already on Twitter.  This is optional, and Twitter never shares user information provided.
4. You’re finished and your account is created!  Now you can search for ‘Mercersburg Summer’ and friends, family and also your favorite charities, organizations and newsmakers.

When you join, make sure to reach out and say hi to us with your own messages that will be shared with everyone who follows you.  On the right side of your home page you will see information about the number of people you are following, the number following you, and popular topics of discussion on the site, called trends.

Now you are ready to send out your first message (here we call them ‘tweets’)!

To get someone’s attention on Twitter and let them know you are speaking to them, simply place an ‘@’ symbol before their username in your message.

For Example: @mburgsummer Looking forward to next summer’s adventure!

The next time Mercersburg Summer Programs logs in to update our network, we will see your message and be able to reply!  Remember, Twitter messages are limited to 140 characters, but can contain links to photos or video, and happy tweeting!

Facebook has become the modern way to keep up to date with family, friends, and of course your favorite organization – Mercersburg Summer!  If you have never visited Facebook before, it is a social networking tool that lets users post recent photos, share links, and check in on your friends.  Facebook is a great way to stay in touch with people all over the world!

If you are already a member of Facebook, simply search for Mercersburg Summer – if not, don’t worry, signing up is easy and takes only a couple minutes!

1. Visit their Web site at www.facebook.com
2. On the right-hand side of the screen, enter in your contact information
3. When you click ‘Sign Up’, you will be asked to enter in a security phrase (to ensure you are human!)
4. You will now be lead through 3 steps to add some more information about yourself.  You can fill these in, or skip them.
5. Once you are done adding information, you are ready to go, and you can search for family, friends, colleagues and of course your favorite companies and organizations!

We keep our Facebook page updated regularly, so check back often to see great photos, articles, contests and updates from the team at Mercersburg Summer.  And of course join in the conversation and post a message to our wall, and we will be sure to reply.

As the internet becomes faster and faster, and more and more content is spread online, video is making a bigger impact every day.  We have all heard of YouTube – the post anything you want community that brings out the best and worst of the web on a daily basis – but there is a more creative and community based outlet that we embrace.  It is called Vimeo.

Vimeo is a social network of creative people who love to share their work.  You can find a number of interesting and thought-provoking pieces – and of course Mercersburg displays a lot of our video content here as well.
