An Awesome Saturday for the Mercersburg Adventure Campers

July 30th, 2011

Today, the campers got to sleep in and have a nice relaxing morning in their cabins. They wrote letters home, read, and just hung out. The junior girls showed up to lunch with some impressive hairdos:

Then, after lunch, everyone had enrichments. I followed the digital photography class around as they took portraits of each other. I took these polaroids of the group:

I also stopped by “The Craft of Art” where they were painting picture frames and masks:

And I went to “Wizard Training” just in time to see a few incredible card tricks:

Derek covered “Joy of Cooking” where they were making their own personalized pizzas:

And ”Edible Experiments” where they were making ice cream:

And “Center Stage” where the campers were having a blast planning their end-of-camp skit:

What a great afternoon!

For dinner, the kids got to have a cookout on the Ford Patio. After they ate, they played games like four square, frisbee and pretzle pie (a game with a ball that’s basically an excuse for everyone to get sprayed with the hose!)

But these games weren’t even the most exciting part of the night. Tonight is the camp out! The kids sleep in tents on campus. Before heading off to bed, everyone walked over to the astronomy shed and looked at Saturn through a huge telescope! What a treat! Derek is going to upload these pictures and create a stop motion video…he got some pretty awesome shots of the kids as they saw the second largest planet.

That’s all for tonight! It’s been a busy day and we’re all ready for a good nights sleep. More updates to come tomorrow.

MAC Enrichments and Great Outdoors at Caledoni

June 28th, 2011

Today was a busy day for the MAC campers. The morning started out with some enrichment activities. In the digital photography class, each camper got his or her own point-and-shoot camera to take pictures around campus. Afterwards, they learned how to edit their images in a computer lab. The kids took some very creative shots!

In the afternoon, the campers split into different groups and went on adventures off campus. One group went to Caladonia State Park to learn wilderness skills.  They even got to hike a little on the Appalachian Trail which runs all the way from Georgia to Maine!

They learned how to tie six different kinds of knots:

…and explored a nearby river:

They also had a splash fight! Everyone ganged up on Will.

After dinner, the kids were surprised when they were told to get into their suits and take part in turtle races. The hurricanes and tornadoes raced across the pool attempting to get their team to the other side first. Look at that determination!

Everyone was very supportive of each other:

And they ended the fun with a watermelon pass:

All in all, it was an exciting second day. Can’t wait to see what the counselors have in store for everyone tomorrow!

The rain can’t keep MAC campers down!

July 20th, 2010

Despite the dreary weather that has swept through Mercersburg’s campus, our MAC campers are keeping their heads high and their spirits up! This lucky photographer had the privilege of sitting in on both the MAC and JAC culinary classes during the rainy morning, and it’s safe to say that these kids are not only athletic, funny, and smart, but they’re pretty darn talented, too!

Lions & Tigers & Bears, OH MY!

July 10th, 2010

As part of Adventure Camp, our kids enroll in Outdoor Adventures, where they head off to exciting places and learn a thing or two about the wilderness. Whether they’re geocaching throughout the area, learning how to tie knots and start campfires, or learning about the wide world of animals, there rarely is a stone that goes unturned. Luckily for me, I was able to tag along with our Wide World of Animals group and experience all of the amazing animals down at the National Zoo!

Outdoor Adventures & Movie Night!

June 30th, 2010

Hey, MACsters!

Before I go into my post about the day, I just want to make a quick announcement & direct your attention to our Flickr page. Things had been looking a little unkempt & in disarray, but we’ve fixed everything and have made it much easier to navigate. If you know someone in MAC, TAC, or even in one of Mercersburg’s special sports camps, you can simply follow THIS LINK and take a look around! Hopefully this will be a lot easier for those of you who frequently check the Flickr. Please let us know what you think! We love to hear feedback, & your opinion really means a lot to us!

Now that business is taken care of, I suppose you want to hear about the MAC campers’ day of outdoor adventures & their night at the cinema!

Day 3: Session 1: Let the games begin!

June 22nd, 2010

Mercersburg Adventure Camp is no stranger to a little friendly competition, and Day 3 of camp was no different! Both the MAC and TAC campers had an exciting, fun-filled day at Adventure Camp–between interesting Enrichment Activities and on-the-edge-of-your-seat Outdoor Activities, our campers are constantly on the go. Let’s be honest, though–who wouldn’t want to make delicious treats in Culinary Delights, or make paper airplanes in Physics? Don’t even get me started on the Outdoor Activities! MAC and TAC campers spent the day rock climbing, horseback riding, kayaking, and caving. Talk about exciting!

What’s even more exciting is the ongoing camp battle of HURRICANES vs. TORNADOES! Read on to find out what went down!
