Guess what MAC has been up to!

July 15th, 2011

Actually, it might be better to say, ‘Guess what MAC hasn’t been up to. They’ve been all over the place. This week they’ve been rock climbing…

And I’m a little bit jealous, I didn’t get to go on that trip… those rocks look awesome!

They’ve been to Cowen’s Gap, swimming and playing at the beach. And the temperature’s been perfect here past couple of days… Being outside is awesome.

And they’ve also been preparing for their Hurricanes and Tornadoes songs and chants! The ones from last session were awesome, I can’t wait to see what they pull off this time!

Everybody participates. =]

Hey, I don’t know if you guys follow along on the flickr, but there’s always new stuff going up there! Check it out sometime by clicking HERE! That’s the link to all the different camps’ collections, and we’re constantly adding more! =]

Last Day of Fun

July 15th, 2011

Audrey goes down slip 'n' slide

Yesterday was the last full day of camp. We wrote ghost stories together in the afternoon, although most of them turned silly, with stories ranging from a man being attacked by a demon in an old castle to Matt killing the adventure camp using his toe-shoes. Then, one afternoon class went to chalk bits of pieces they’ve written on the road. The other class did it on Friday. Then, all the Young Writers went to have a giant slip ‘n’ slide. A tarp thrown over a large hill with water and detergent poured on it, the slip ‘n’ slide was a success, for the most part.

That night, after dinner, the Young Writers watched the Theatre camp’s production. Afterwards, we all headed over to the barn. We started the session with a campfire and the words “It was a dark and stormy summer night…” and ended it with a campfire and the words “It was a dark and stormy summer night…” We all told ghost stories we had written and made up around the fire, whilst roasting s’mores. After finally managing to put out the fire, most of the campers gathered in the common room to watch “10 Things I Hate About You”, and the girls slept in the common room together. This session was great, but all good things must come to an end, and so, we’re all heading off today, on Friday, with all the great memories in the front of our minds.

MAC Adventures

July 15th, 2011

Yesterday the MAC campers went on all day great outdoor trips. They got back just in time for dinner. All the boys decided to wear toga’s to dinner, it was quite an amusing scene!

After dinner, the Tornadoes and Hurricanes split up and worked on making a song for their team.

The kids were having a lot of fun brain storming, being silly and creative. Soon we will see the result of their creative thinking.

Haunted Ghost Tour of Mercersburg Academy

July 14th, 2011

On Wednesday, we started our day off like most days. Going to our morning classes and then eating lunch. In our afternoon class the two classes both created their own crime scene. We had certain objects that each group would use. The other class would go 5 at a time and look around the room searching for clues. That activity carried on for half an hour and then Michele told both classes that we would be setting up a haunted ghost tour of Mercersburg Academy! Both classes were ecstatic! But before we could decorate the stops we had to do a relay race before. We were split off into 4 groups of 6. The groups we had were Sparta, The Name, Dirty Hippos, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Sparta won and they won bragging rights till next summer.

After dinner we got dressed up for our ghost tour and decorated the stops we were given. We all made up stories to tell the people on the tour. We had 2 groups and 2 tour guides in each group. We all got into character and were all really into it. Some of the adventure camp and the theater camp came to see our ghost tour. At the end of the ghost tour we all went together to see each others stops and what they did for each stop. After the ghost tour we went back to the dorms and we had writing hour.

Signing off,

Amelia Phung :)

Murder at Mercersburg Academy?

July 13th, 2011

Breaking news! Lester the Jester was found dead on July 12th, in a classroom in Irvine, in Mercersburg Academy! Strange writing was found on the chalkboard, and a note held up by bloody darts on the wall. Worst of all was Lester, his face bloody, with a black lipstick mark on his cheek.  Could this be the work of Junior the Juggler and Mary Melancholy, or some other mysterious character?

Okay. So that’s not exactly what happened, but here’s what did: For afternoon classes, we were brought into a room for five minutes, to investigate a crime. Lester, a.k.a. Matt, was dead, lying on the floor. Around the room were clues, helping solve the crime. Us students then went back to class and wrote down what we thought had happened. We then started setting up our own crime scene, the victims, the décor, and the clues.

Next, after dinner, we had a “friendly” four-squares game, while others hung out at the playground. After that, we went to one of the theaters to hear from Matt Maurer.

He had us do acting games, like warm-ups, acts based on nightmares, and role-playing. Matt also read a scene from his new play, showing in October.  After that, we retired to our rooms for a well-earned sleep.

Oh yeah! Check out this song that Sarah and Chris sang to the Theater Kids at dinner.

Catching up with ESL + Theatre + Young Writers

July 12th, 2011

Greetings,

It is apparent that the camp cam team has been neglecting ESL, YWC, and Theater camp for the past few days so here is an explosion of updates!

So this morning I jumped around from class to class in the ESL territory. I found the campers in Rutledge Hall and the Library, my first entrance in both buildings, this was quite the adventure for me…

Here’s what I found:

After I visited ESL I went down to the dance studio in Burgin to see what the Theater kids were up to.

Turns out they were practicing acting through body language and facial expression.

After lunch I did some interviews with the Teen Adventure Camp while Zoe caught up with the Young Writers Camp.

Looks like there was a crime scene to be investigated. The campers gathered up clues and got the chance to create write their own story about about what they thought had  happened to Matt, the dead clown.

And that is all we have for today. Stay tuned for TAC interviews!

Potions, Pool, Braids, and Karaoke

July 12th, 2011

On Monday,  we began the day at our morning classes and then went to lunch.  After lunch, we did some writing or reading during our free write period.  In our afternoon class, we read famous spells from James and the Giant Peach and from MacBeth and then wrote our own spells for magic potions and performed them for the rest of the class.  Then we went swimming at Mercersburg Academy’s pool and some campers played in a Four Square Tournament before heading to dinner.

The girls finally got their way, getting to braid camp counselor Matt’s hair (This has been an ongoing request since the beginning of camp). The evening ended with Karaoke with a guest DJ with a great sound system.  It was a fun way for Young Writers Campers to unwind and perform with their friends.

TAC Campers are Already Adventuring on Day One!

July 11th, 2011

Today was filled with excitement for the Teen Adventure Campers. They went Cedar Ridge Adventures for the day! After arriving, they worked on some team building activities with Dan, Dustin and some other Cedar Ridge staff. They also played games with moon and fleece balls. They also set some goals that they wanted to fulfill that day. It was lots of fun.

Then the campers broke into three smaller groups to take part in the next series of activities. They had to undergo challenges like walking through a “mine field” blindfolded with only a partner to guide them through. Natalia had to pay close attention to directions so she wouldn’t step on any explosives and lose a limb!

The campers worked together to overcome a number of obstacles:

Then, after a delicious pack lunch of turkey sandwiches, the campers were faced with the greastest challenge of the day: a high ropes course!!! Dustin taught them how to put on their harnesses:

…and then they started climbing…

It was a great day. The kids fullfilled all of the goals they had set that morning. They pushed themselves, learned more about each other, offered other campers help and support, had fun, and they all got back in the bus in one piece!

When they arrived back on campus, they were excited to find a carnival awaiting them. There were hot dogs and hamburgers for dinner and cotton candy, funnel cake, and ice cream for desert. There were also carnival games, face painting, and a moon bounce obstacle course.  Afterwards, the campers did cabin decorating before heading off to bed to rest up for the big day tomorrow!

IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCCEED, CLIMB, CLIMB AGAIN.

July 11th, 2011

Yesterday at YWC, was full of rock climbing, friends, dogs, and lots of fun!

We started the day off with our daily classes. Writing for the Internet, Fiction, and Poetry are all lots of fun! After our 2 hour classes, we go for lunch at the dining hall. Yesterday was a fabulous gourmet meal of pizza! We had time to hang out with friends, eat , and have a good time.

After lunch, we have free write time.  Yesterday we wrote in the giant library that they have here on YWC campus.  It’s 4 story’s high! There are so many books, that it just blows you away! After our 20 minute free write, we head to our afternoon classes. We made talked  about monsters and each had to write 4 characteristics of our monster and put them in a pile. Then, each camper chose from pile and had to create a story using their monster. We would read these stories in the chapel later that day.

Next, was our afternoon activity. There was rock climbing, ceramics, and theatre games. Rock climbing was such fun! Everyone tried their hardest to climb to the top.

We concluded the night with our chapel reading. We listened to a gothic organist while reading our monster stories in the candlelight. How spooky!

Yesterday at YWC was really great and haunting! I wonder what tomorrow will bring?
